FDMA - Frequency Division Multiple Access

Frequency Division Multiple Access (FDMA) is resource sharing technology whereby the total amount of allocated electromagnetic spectrum is divided in a number of radio frequency channels or carriers. Their exact number and size, in terms of occupied bandwidth, depends on the deployed communication platform and the local regulations set forth by spectrum management government regulatory agencies.

The full set of carriers is further divided into an upper and a lower subband to cover the in- and outbound communication path requirement in a standard two-way, full duplex call model. Each calling/called party is granted a pair of carriers, one from the upper and one from the lower band, for the duration of the call. The carrier pair assignment is dynamic and the ressources in use will be re-assigned to other users as soon as they become available.

FDMA was the common AI in analog mobile network platforms such as AMPS (Advanced Mobile Phone System) and NMT (Nordic Mobile Telephone).
